In 1998 Pouné began work on the design of what would be her first built project. A collaborative project with her engineer father and brother to design their future family home.

The brief encompassed a comfortable, affordable yet contemporary and stylish family home. Three bedrooms, study, and open plan living areas that could function in a united fashion for large gatherings and social events.

The split level open plan design employs such elements as low height walls, joinery elements, the hearth and curved feature walls to create both a sense of openness and yet identifiable spaces with individual characteristics.

The upper floor containing the bedrooms and study acts as a mezzanine which overlooks the main formal lounge and is connected not only visually to the lower level but also structurally through the soaring roof with its exposed structural steel spine that originates from the curved wall of the bar and terminates above the mezzanine balustrade. This focal point of the design is a wonderfully powerful feature within the home and a real engineering feat.

The warm browns of the jarrah timber used in the joinery is offset against the cool blacks of the granite, natural porcelain floors and neutral walls. A main feature of the material pallet is the highly textured bagged terracotta curved walls. In order to achieve the desired effect Pouné collaborated with the renderer in the surface application and composed the way in which they were to apply the mixture to get the final result.

Normanhurst House has certainly stood the test of time with guests to the house still marvelling at the uniqueness of design and warmth of space that the house emits.
